If No 8 OJ Noa was not inspirational enough then add two rookies and you get more of a lift. The performance of winger Josh Wells and hooker Ben Gordon was outstanding in a tough fought 15-14 win against University Owls.
Noa was again the man of the match making it three weeks in a row as he carries the load without his wrecking ball mates Sokai Tai (injured) and the on-leave Tai Valeni. Experienced OJ admits that the performance of the two first year out of school players were telling actors in the victory.
Winger Wells is an instinctive player who has plenty of flair and confidence in his ability. He knows the game for someone so young. And what about Gordon who was pushed into hooker due to injuries throughout the club. Older brother Jake would have been there had he not been out with concussion and the whole family stood their proud as young Ben put on a performance.
The Whites had long periods of possession and the Owls none. Yet a half time Owls led 5-7. Wells scored a try and then kicked a penalty for the home side to 15-7. Toby Wilson went to the bin, Uni scored. Wilson came back with 10 ten to go and Billy Chalker was off to Wilson’s seat on the sideline. It was a nail biter as Uni kept picking and driving hoping to secure a penalty. The referee was most generous to them during the rest of the game so they would have been confident. He had blown enough and the Whites sneaked the win.
It was a good day out with fourths winning 62-0, thirds 24-12, colts 5
