University-Norths played out the game and were well in it before the Whites just picked it up a gear and hit the tough button to take the score from 7-12 to 33-12 at half time. They won 45-24 after giving all the reserves a run allowing Uni something of a comeback.
Fourths won 47-19, thirds lost 12-31, colts won 20-17 and seconds survived 10-9.
The Owls are a team of goers and play it to the end. The difficulty is matching the Queanbeyan pack which dominated the set pieces and at the break down. Locks Toby Wilson and Ben Leaper are hardly seen but are always at the scene. The front row is unstoppable with Chris Barbaro hitting forward and hitting often, Les Makin damaging and hooker Carl Elliot always bruising.
Again it is the back row which will draw the praise. Ryan Jones, OJ Noa and Dan Penca are supreme in this competition. Penca was prominent in a few try assists including an inside ball to fullback Robbie Coleman.
While the backs get little press their recent games have features well-constructed set plays. Winger Brendan Spears scored tries, Keith Morgan, Robbie Coleman and Josh White one each for the backline. In the middle of it all is the much maligned Billy Chalker who gets little praise for his trade work.
This was no easy game even though the score line might indicate differently. The team is made of tough stuff and have scored 26 tries in the last three weeks,14 against two teams in the running for the semi-finals.
Lock Wilson scored a try on his third attempt at the line in a couple of minutes. It was his first try this year and maybe the first in two years. Mr. Consistent is matched in the backs by Mr. Marmont.
Winger Brendan Spears scored two.
