Queanbeyan’s first grade face the high flying Eagles tomorrow in the preliminary final of the John I. Dent Cup. In the Whites’ memory bank will be the loss to Royals in the fixture last year and will not want hear of a repeat.
Gungahlin have lock Ben McGee on the paddock even though he was red carded last week. McGee is the ultimate competitor and loves to niggle and sledge. It is a reflection of his age and his aging body.
The match ups are ring-dingers with the front rows likely to be the highlight. But the danger for Queanbeyan is Gungahlin’s number 8, Rocky Ilolahia, who can turn a game with his explosive busts. OJ Noa and Sokai Tai will be taking a special interest in him. Fortunately, he is not the fittest player in the competition.
The Whites will be hoping that fullback Robbie Coleman has a more consistent game and his combination with the centres will go a long way to winning the match.
Wingers James Marmont and Brendon Spears will also have to be alert given they face the flyer Jamie Kotz and Brumby James Dargaville.
Both sides have impressive defensive skills and it will come down to who can execute their attack without making repeat mistakes.
Queanbeyan’s bench looks strong with Mitch Douch, Ben Leaper and Tom G. Darmody all regular first graders.
The game kicks off at 3.25pm at Viking Park with James Morris the referee.
